  • Payroll tax is a state and territory tax, so it’s calculated separately in each jurisdiction where you have taxable wages. “Wages” is defined broadly and can include salary and wages, superannuation contributions, fringe benefits, and some contractor or employment agency payments (depending on the rules that apply).Once you’ve identified the taxable wages for that jurisdiction, you apply the relevant threshold or deduction (if you’re entitled) and then the applicable payroll tax rate. Rates and thresholds vary by state/territory and can change, and some jurisdictions also impose additional charges for larger employers (for example, Victoria has payroll tax surcharges and Queensland has a mental health levy linked to payroll tax for larger employers). If you operate across multiple states or have multiple related entities, additional rules can apply. Nexus provisions help determine which jurisdiction taxes an employee’s wages for a month when duties are performed in more than one place, and grouping rules can treat connected businesses as a single group, meaning only one member can claim the tax-free threshold.
  • Due dates depend on the jurisdiction you’re registered in and your assigned lodgment frequency. In many jurisdictions, periodic (often monthly) returns are generally due by the 7ᵗʰ day after the end of the month (or the next business day), and revenue offices may publish special dates for certain periods such as December. Most employers also need to complete an annual reconciliation after 30 June. For example, NSW’s annual return is due 28 July and includes June wages, and Victoria’s annual reconciliation is due 21 July and also includes June wages (so there’s no separate June monthly return in those jurisdictions).Your payment frequency can also depend on annual payroll tax liability; in NSW, if your annual payroll tax liability exceeds $20,000 you must pay monthly, while those below that amount must lodge an annual return and may choose to pay monthly. For employers registered in multiple jurisdictions, Ryan can help manage the separate calendars and lodgments so deadlines aren’t missed.
  • Contractor payments can be subject to payroll tax. In many cases (and in many jurisdictions), payments made under “relevant contract” arrangements can be treated as taxable wages for payroll tax purposes, unless a specific exemption applies. This means it’s not just about whether someone is called a “contractor” or an “employee”—it’s about how the arrangement fits the contractor provisions and whether an exemption is available under the relevant state or territory rules. Revenue authorities also expect you to keep records that support any exemption you rely on.Ryan can review your contractor engagements against the applicable jurisdictional rules to help ensure your position is accurate, consistent, and defensible if reviewed.
  • Yes, we help growing businesses minimize payroll tax liability through strategic planning and compliance optimization across Australia. We identify available exemptions for apprentices, trainees, and other eligible workers, review contractor classifications, and advise on interstate operations to maximize threshold benefits. Our specialists also identify calculation errors in existing returns and work with revenue offices to secure refunds where appropriate.

Wage Classification and Treatment Analysis

Our Approach
We conduct comprehensive wage classification reviews across salaries, bonuses, allowances, superannuation, fringe benefits, and contractor payments. Our analysis identifies misclassifications, ensures consistent treatment across states, and captures available exemptions.

Multijurisdictional Threshold Management

Our Approach
Our payroll tax specialists support employers in monitoring thresholds and interstate apportionment. We work alongside your team to validate wage tracking, review apportionment and grouping considerations, and reduce risk while maintaining compliance and maximizing threshold outcomes.

Strategic Workforce Planning

Exemption and Concession Identification
Our payroll tax advisors assist employers in identifying and applying available exemptions and concessions, including apprentice and trainee wages, parental leave, and volunteer payments. Through validation of eligibility criteria, we help ensure compliant documentation across all relevant jurisdictions.

Contractor vs. Employee Classification
Our specialists review worker classifications to ensure correct treatment under payroll tax legislation, examining working arrangements, contractual terms, and control factors to establish defensible positions that withstand revenue office scrutiny across all states.
